Laura Hickey

As a naturopath my passion lies in food as medicine, herbal medicine and educating clients about health and how the body works. A greater understanding of the body means you have tools you can use to take care of your health. I specialise in and have extensive experience with autoimmune conditions, digestive health, allergies, female reproduction, pregnancy, preconception and infant and child health. The combination of Kinesiology and Naturopathy enable me to integrate physiological and an emotional energetic components and work holistically in your health and well being. Iridology is a modality of natural medicine that fascinates me and is a wonderful tool in practice to help get a better insight into what is happening with the body.

I have always had an interest in herbs and natural health. I delight in my job. Within the clinic I focus on educating my clients about their bodies and the particular disorder or disease that is causing the problem. Knowledge is power, with better understanding comes a better ability to take care of your health in the long term. I endeavour not to be heavy handed with supplements and herbs, however certain ailments will disappear much more quickly if they are hit hard with an intensive course of supplements and herbs. Other ailments only need a couple of dietary changes in order to clear up.

profile 2 Good health is a journey, a fun and exciting one. However I understand that   change can be scary and it can be difficult. The energy and vitality you gain from being healthy is a great reward.

Ten years of experience working as a cook in the restaurant and catering industry mean that my passion for food as medicine extends into delicious healthy food from the kitchen. I understand that good food is about taste and nutrition, it is about sharing and enjoying food with friends and family and feeling great physically and emotionally afterwards.

My son and I have traveled on this naturopathic journey together. Kayden does not blink an eye at having to drink a herbal tonic or take two or three supplements when he is sick. He has experienced the benefits of natural medicine and although it doesn’t always taste the best, he knows that the results are worth it. As an Aunty and friend to many mum’s I have learnt that not all children realise the benefits of herbal tonics or have the ability to swallow tablets so I have spent some time investing in child friendly supplements and concocting child friendly tonics. I understand that you don’t want to spend $20-$30 on something your child will never take.

Pregnancy/Preconception/Infant and Child health

Initially when I qualified I wasn’t sure what area I wanted to specialise in as a naturopath. Three weeks before I finished my degree I ran into Theresa Clifford the midwife who helped me deliver my son and she offered me a practice room at the Fremantle Infant Health Centre. I decided then to focus on preconception care, pregnancy and infant and child health. I am delighted and grateful for this choice.

Proper pre-conception and pregnancy care can;

  • Boost your babies general constitutional health
  • Improve digestive health and function
  • Reduce likelihood of developing allergies
  • Reduce likelihood of developing mental health and behavioural issues
  • Improve immune system health
  • Reduce likelihood of developing future fertility issues
  • Reduce complications during labour and childbirth

Preconception care is an investment into the future health of your child

Female Reproductive Disorders

You can’t specialise in preconception without knowing a lot about everything female reproductive. I have a thorough knowledge of the female reproductive system, the hormones involved and the many ways this system can go wrong. Hormones and reproductive issues can often be cleared up with dietary, herbal and supplemental support. Fremantle Natural Health can help restore balance to women suffering from;

  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • PCOS
  • Heavy Periods (Menorrhagia)
  • Painful periods (Dysmenorrhea)
  • Acne
  • Sporadic period
  • No period (Amenorrhea)

We live in an era of extremely poor digestive health.This may be due to our modern diets, high use of antibiotics, stressful lifestyles, super clean living environments, not being breast fed at all or for long enough, fed too early as infants, caesarian births, fed too many grain based foods as infants. Some of us have been eating foods that irritate our guts for years. In short our modern world is not good for our ancient bodies. If our digestive system is not functioning optimally then the best food in the world will not nurture it. A good healthy digestive system is essential to a healthy body and mind. Digestive ailments I can help with at Fremantle Natural Health include;

  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Irritable Bowel syndrome
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Coeliac disease
  • Lactose intolerance
  • H. Pylori
  • Gastroesophageal Disorder (Heartburn)
  • Constipation
  • Chronic Diarrhoea
  • Travellers Diarrhoea

Dietary Changes such as GAPS and Specific carbohydrate may improve conditions such as

  • Autism
  • Dyslexia
  • ADHD
  • ADD

Although I do live a healthy lifestyle, I’m not perfect. Life is about experience and moderation. Detoxing is a great way to get your health back on track and is also a great way to experience or remind ourselves how good it feels to be clean and clear in body and mind. Detoxing is also a wonderful way to access good health and learn healthy eating habits for those who aren’t quiet sure where to start with health and a healthy life. Group detoxes which I run for 4 weeks a few times a year are also a great way to meet new people and learn to socialise without alcohol, coffee or cake.

I see a lot of autoimmunity in my clinic and therefore have developed the skills, knowledge and experience to help regulate the immune system and reduce the negative symptoms associated with these conditions.
