Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome – Perspective of a Naturopath

In 2017 my beautiful daughter Rose was born and two days later we found out she had Down Syndrome. As parents my partner and I have been through many emotions but generally tend to settle on the deep unconditional love we have for our precious daughter. She is 11 weeks while I write this, so we don’t know what the future holds, but we feel positive sometimes a little scared but up for the challenge.

As a Naturopath I am curious to find out what Down Syndrome means from a physiological perspective and what can I do to reduce the incidence of cognitive impairment in order to give my baby the best opportunities in life.

FullSizeRenderDown Syndrome/Trisomy 21 is a genetic chromosomal alteration and therefore it is fixed and can’t be improved. This is certainly what I thought before I began researching, however I was surprised to see that there are many things you can do to improve the cognitive function, physical ability and even physical features of your child with Down Syndrome. Essentially it is best to start in utero, however this is not always possible as many parents don’t realise they have a baby with Trisomy 21 until after birth. After birth there is still so much you can do, the earlier the better but any time is a good time to start. As a Naturopath and mother I will be accessing all therapies available to me;

  • Naturopath – Dietary, supplemental and herbal medicine
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine – Acupuncture, diet.
  • Kinesiology – Brian integration
  • Osteopathy – Cranial, palate, sinus development.
  • Physiotherapy – Gross motor and muscle movement and skills
  • Occupational therapy – Fine motor skills
  • Speech Pathology – Speech skills
  • GP
  • Hospital Paediatrician
  • Community Health Nurse

I will record our journey and share my findings here on my website so that they are easily shared with others. I hope that you access and get good use out of this information so that you can give your DS child the best chance at reaching their full potential.

I am available for consults in clinic and via skype and I recommend you book in and make an appointment to get the best of what I can offer.
